Angular lines, less realism in the backgrounds more of an indie vibe. The art is cartoony in much the same way as Casanova (from Moon and Ba) or Lumberjanes can be. Amazing storytelling isn’t a term I use lightly Maclean brings a unique sensibility to this story that just pulls the reader along with the pace of the book, speeding up and slowing down organically. Well ApocalyptiGirl: An Aria For the End Times shows us that same amazing storytelling again, this time with a kick-ass female protagonist. We reviewed Maclean’s Head Lopper after 2014’s Asbury Park Comicon (which I really have to say has showcased some amazing talent over the years) and we were blown away by his art style and storytelling ability. I’m not here to elevate an art form, or to perform critical analysis of the stories socio-economic and societal implications, I’m here to speak to you, the reader, the comic book fan, about good comics. I’ve reviewed comics for quite a while now and my mission has always been the same.

Rather than picturing the hard struggle to settle a “frontier,” the book deals with relations between people of many backgrounds-European American, Native American and Asian American-as seen through the eyes of her beautifully realized main character, whose mixed ancestry never holds her back. However, quite unlike Wilder’s books, her non-European characters are neither stereotypes nor peripheral to the story. It deals with a theme-the development of the West- familiar to fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder. If anything, this may be her most ambitious and best book yet. Even when dealing with truly sensitive subject matter, she always manages to bring out the basic humanity in her characters in ways that make her work accessible to readers of all ages. “I have always admired the subtle power and gentle clarity of Linda Sue Park’s writing. How likely is it that book readers are going to spoil House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones that’s pulling in ridiculous numbers on HBO?
